Surgery Patients with severe cases of hammertoe may need surgery. If the toe is still flexible, only a simple procedure that releases the tendon may be involved. Such procedures sometimes require only a single stitch and a Band-Aid. If the toe has become rigid, surgery on the bone is necessary, but it can still be performed in the doctor's office. A procedure called PIP arthroplasty involves releasing the ligaments at the joint and removing a small piece of toe bone, which restores the toe to its normal position. The toe is held in this position with a pin for about 3 weeks, and then the pin is removed. Corns. A corn is actually a form of a callus - a protective layer of dead skin cells composed of a tough protein called keratin. A corn itself is cone-shaped and usually develops if a shoe rubs against the toes for a prolonged period. As the skin thickens, the corn forms a knobby core that points inward. Hard corns develop on toe joints, usually on the little toe. A shoe that squeezes the front of the foot may cause one toe to rub against another forming a corn between the toes, which is usually soft. These corns can be painful, however, if they harden and rub against each other. Heels, ankles, top, sole and every parts of the foot are examined to know the exact reasons behind the foot pain. X -ray is the most common diagnostic technique to find out the causes of foot pain. The problem is easily diagnosed with an X-ray. The arches are touched and pressed by doctors to identify the possible reason behind the pain. This process is often adopted to diagnose a fracture or a sprain. The person is asked to move his feet in the directions shown by the medical practitioner. It's also carried out by sensing the nerves in case any damage has been caused. Diabetes related pain in the feet means that there is some nerve damage happening to cause these pains. It is an extremely serious warning that veins in the foot are closing up - the circulation of blood in foot is being closed off. If you suffer with diabetes and feel any tingling sensations at all in your feet, report it immediately. Did you know that 15% of all people with diabetes will suffer foot ulcers - the foot is being poisoned to the extent it can tear a hole open in the foot. 3% of these sufferers will lose their legs - FACT! There are a variety of symptoms for flat feet, and not everyone will experience all of them. Symptoms might include tired, sore feet (particularly on the bottom); lower back pain; pain in the arch; or tired legs. Your feet probably feel better when you roll your feet toward the outside. To confirm whether you have flat feet, press on the arch at the highest point. If you have weak foot, you will find this fairly painful. Another test is simply to look at your feet. When standing, you pronate; your weight falls toward the inside of your foot, and your arch almost disappears entirely. Sport activities contribute significantly to side of foot pain with athletics and gymnastics being top of the list. There are two distinctive fractures than can cause intense side of foot pain and these are March fractures and Stress fractures. March fractures result from undertaking vigorous physical activity without the correct warm up procedures or when a person undertakes extreme exercise outside of their normal everyday activities. Stress fractures normally result from repetitive and excessive strain over a given period of time. From the onset of any side of foot pain , first treatment is to simply remember RICE. This stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. Shoes with high heels can create much trouble for your feet. From the narrowing of the toe box (the area surrounding the front of the foot) to the angle of incline, these shoes can do quite a bit of internal damage to feet. First, when narrowing of the feet is forced, as occurs in a high heeled shoe, the mid-foot and toe areas are forced into an unnatural position. The ligaments, tendons and muscles are strained into a much smaller space than what the foot requires. Over time, nerves become compressed, blood flow is restricted to areas of the foot (particularly in the toes) and foot conditions ensue.
